Adams County Real Estate

Adams County, which was originally a part of Arapahoe County when it belonged to the Kansas Territory, is the fifth largest state by population in Colorado. The population was just over 414,000 in 2006, which showed almost a 14% increase from 2000. Adams County is named for Alva Adams, who was the Governor of Colorado from 1887-1889, 1897-1899, and in 1905. Brighton is the county seat, and Adams County real estate is part of the Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Denver-Aurora-Boulder Combined Statistical Area. It is one of the largest counties by area, as well, although 53 square miles was given away in 1989 to the Denver International Airport.

Adams County Homes

Due to this acquisition, Adams County real estate now covers 1,198 square miles with two oddly shaped peninsulas on the north of the county. It also gave a small portion of its land to the City and County of Broomfield in 2001. The county surrounds the majority of the Denver International Airport, which it surrendered land for, as well as the City and County of Denver, Colorado. Other counties that border Adams County include: Weld, Morgan, Washington, Arapahoe, Jefferson, and Broomfield. When the county was originally formed in 1901, it came from a small portion of Arapahoe County, which at that time was divided into Adams, South Arapahoe, and Denver County and the City of Denver.

Adams County real estate originally spanned 160 miles from the Kansas border to Sheridan, but was changed in 1903. The county gave 99 miles on the eastern edge to develop Washington and Yuma counties, which reduced it to only 72 miles in width. The county seat was then elected to be Brighton in 1904. In 1859, Henderson Island on the South Platte River became the first permanent settlement when it was inhabited by John D. Henderson, who was a politician and pro-slavery advocate. He fled to this area because he had been accused of vote fraud in eastern Kansas, and made his living selling items to gold seekers during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. Today, the Adams County Regional Park and Fairgrounds is situated on Henderson Island.

Surrounding Cites

Some cities that comprise Adams County real estate include: Arvada, Aurora, Brighton, Commerce City, Bennett, Federal Heights, Northglenn, Thornton, and Westminster. Many of these towns and cities lie within other counties, as well. Another middle class county for the state of Colorado, Adams County has a median income between $47,000 and $52,000. Their poverty rate is about 8.9%, including more than 10% of those impoverished that are under the age of 18. As with most counties in Colorado, Adams County is also 77% white in population, with small variations of other races throughout the county.
