149 years ago a man by the name of Thomas Bergen arrived in the forested area and decided to call it home. He took it upon himself to create summer hunting and stage shop range for the Indians native to the area (the Arapaho and Ute). Denver, the capitol city of Colorado, is approximately 30 miles east of Evergreen and the lumber they needed to builds homes and other structures came from Evergreen. D.P. Wilmot, a rancher who, like many other farmers and ranchers, sold his produce and cattle in Denver, had a spread he whimsically named "Evergreen," and thus the town's name was birthed.

It wasn't long before the town's population and economy flourished as much as the nature surrounding it. By 1880 there were barber shops, a blacksmith, hotels, six sawmills, and over 200 residents living in Evergreen homes. By 1911, with the improvement in travel, the town, along with Denver, saw a significant increase in size.
