Cheeseman Park has one of the most interesting stories of all Denver neighborhoods. In the middle to late 19th century what is now the Cheeseman Park neighborhood was known as the Prospect Hill Cemetery which was of course, a cemetery. Located east of Denver, city planners in 1907 decided the area would be a good place to develop a residential neighborhood so Denver homes could be built to house more people as the city itself became more and more populated. Thus, the cemetery which was not be properly used, was turned into Cheesman Park. It was named after Walter Cheesman a Denver pioneer whose family donated a Pavilion which stands at the eastern side of the park after Walter's death. Indeed, few Denver neighborhoods can claim that kind of history!
Cheesman Park is one of the oldest Denver neighborhoods dating back to 1868 and by 1915 had some of the most beautiful and audacious Denver homes. Many mansions of the city's wealthiest folks lined the meandering carriage ways of the park. One of the most attractive pieces of Denver real estate, Cheesman park forms in a figure eight and those meandering carriage ways bring you by a reflecting pool, the Cheesman Pavilion, and groves of tress surrounded by a meadow.
